Yesterday, A24 announced that they would be releasing a full trailer for writer/director Alex Garland’s upcoming horror film Men today – and a trailer for the film is now indeed online. You can check it out in the embed above. While this film is being promoted on the names of Garland and star Jessie Buckley, who is up for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in The Lost Daughter, the trailer reveals that Rory Kinnear of Penny Dreadful and the last four James Bond movies also has a major role in the film… Maybe not as one specific character, but judging by the trailer it appears that we’ll reach a point in the movie where every male character around Buckley is being played by Kinnear. Even child characters. That’s pretty creepy, while also making Men quite a showcase for Kinnear.
Men tells the story of
a young woman who goes on a solo vacation to the English countryside after the death of her ex-husband.
Buckley and Kinnear are joined in the cast by Paapa Essiedu, who viewers may know from Gangs of London and I May Destroy You.
Men was produced by Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich, with Cahal Bannon co-producing.
Garland previously wrote and directed the films Ex Machina and Annihilation, and reportedly did some uncredited directing work on the comic book adaptation Dredd, which he also scripted. He has also written 28 Days Later, Sunshine, and Never Let Me Go, and he created the series Devs. The films The Beach and The Tesseract were based on novels he wrote. We first heard about Men in November of 2020, at which time Garland simply described it as “a low budget horror movie, set in the UK.”
Men is scheduled to receive a theatrical release on May 20th. The film has been rated R for “disturbing and violent content, graphic nudity, grisly images and language“.
