Mel Gibson was last seen trying to yuck it up alongside Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell in DADDY’S HOME 2 last year, but that’s not the kind of project best suited to Gibson’s talents. What does sound like something right up his alley is the new action-thriller WALDO, which he has just joined alongside PACIFIC RIM’s Charlie Hunnam and BABY DRIVER’S Eiza Gonzalez. And, before you ask, no, this is not a movie based on the classic series of “Where’s Waldo” novellas, which would have been astounding.

THR got the scoop that the three actors would be starring in the thriller from Tim Kirkby, who is known for directing television comedies like VEEP and FLEABAG. Based on the novel “Last Looks,” the story follows a disgraced former LAPD detective, Charlie Waldo (Hunnam), who has decided to live a secluded life in the mountains – no doubt spending most of his days chopping wood. Soon, he is brought back into the crime-fighting business to investigate the murder of a TV star’s wife. Action and suspense ensues, and Waldo likely has a moment or two where he wishes he were back in the mountains chopping wood.
This adds yet another movie to all three actors’ stacked decks. Gibson has several projects coming down the pipe, including S. Craig Zahler’s (BRAWL IN CELL BLOCK 99) DRAGGED ACROSS CONCRETE; Hunnam has TRIPLE FRONTIER from JC Chandor on the docket and; Eiza Gonzalez has been busy post-BABY DRIVER, including Robert Rodriguez’s ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL and KUNG FURY 2.
Filming on WALDO is set to begin early next year.
