It seems like forever ago when director Jonathan Liebesman (WRATH OF THE TITANS) and producer Michael Bay's upcoming TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES reboot had the spotlight of criticism in its face. While many still can’t get over the new look of the titular teen turtles, there was also a table flip when it came to that whole story about them being aliens (did you catch the reference to that in the latest trailer?). I thought the new trailers silenced a lot of skeptics but unbeknownst to me, there also seems to be some critical heat geared towards the beautiful and talented Megan Fox who was cast as April O’Neil.
Speaking to MTV, Fox took a moment to address critics of her casting in the film:
“Someone’s always going to be upset about something. When you’re [making] a movie like this and making it live-action, there are things where you’ll have to depart from the original material a little bit. People will be disappointed, but I think people will be overwhelmed with how exciting and amazing and how fresh and how true to the original this is — but you can’t please everyone all the time. I’ve never had more people come up to me to tell me they’re excited about a movie than this one. Nothing I’ve been a part of before has had that sort of reaction.”
Fox has been known to stay away from the Internet (she quit Twitter after a week) but seems to be aware that there are fans who both love and hate her casting in TMNT (or probably any movie). Her reply to that seems to be a "haters gonna hate" attitude which is perfectly awesome. I think dumping on a movie or actor before you’ve seen a finished product is the equivalent of shouting first in a comment thread; it’s a race to see whose preconceived notion gets the most attention and doesn't do the world any favours.
I feel like I should end with a haiku or deep quotation of some kind, but here’s Fox instead.
TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES arrives on August 8 2014. Watch the latest trailer below:
