Megaforce: Promo for 1982: The Greatest Geek Year Ever!

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

If you haven't seen Hal Needham's Megaforce, you're missing out on one of the cheesiest action films of all time! Produced by Raymond Chow's Golden Harvest at a huge $20 million budget (double the cost of Star Wars), it was meant to kickstart a huge franchise for the eighties, with tie-in videogames (a young Bryan Cranston plays the gamer in the TV promo), a soundtrack album and more. The movie crashed and burned at the box office, earning a meager $5.7 million. Ouch.

However, in the years that followed (thanks to near constant cable replay) the movie became a major cult item among fans of bad movies, with the crew behind South Park even citing it as an influence on Team America: World Police. It's one of the many iconic movies featured in the upcoming doc, 1982: The Greatest Geek Year Ever, and to help promote their Kickstarter, they've made a nice little promo piece highlighting this "good bad movie".

Made by fans for fans, 1982: Greatest Geek Year Ever! will take viewers behind-the-scenes at a time when fandom was in its infancy, featuring rare interviews with genre superstars from in front of and behind the camera of the biggest and most influential movies ever made. From award-winning producers Roger Lay, Jr. (Star Trek: The Roddenberry Vault, The Twilight Zone 60th: Remembering Rod Serling, Aliens Ate My Homework), Mark A. Altman (CW’s Pandora, The Librarians, author, St. Martin’s bestselling "The Fifty-Year Mission" books) and Thomas P. Vitale (Nextflix’s Slasher, Pandora), will be a celebration of the single greatest geek moviegoing year ever including tidbits about E.T. – The Extra-Terrestrial, Blade Runner, John Carpenter’s The Thing, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Poltergeist, Creepshow, The Dark Crystal, Tron, Conan The Barbarian, Paul Schrader’s Cat People and George Miller’s The Road Warrior. In addition to honoring the classics, the documentary will also revisit such cult films as Megaforce, Time Rider: The Adventures of Lyle Swann, The Sword & The Sorcerer, and Liquid Sky, a film about miniature aliens in New York who thrive on heroin and sex.

They've got a Kickstarter going right now to supplement the film’s production budget to allow for the additional licensing of clips, clearances, and global travel in the age of COVID. The finished doc will feature exhaustive one-on-one conversations with the biggest names in Hollywood. PLUS- it now appears as though our very own JOBLO MOVIE PRODUCTIONS will be one of the executive producers on this project (similar to the ARCADE DREAMS documentary a while back), we thought we should remind you all about this awesome 80s nostalgia project, whose Kickstarter campaign is ending on Tuesday. 1982: Greatest Geek Year will be completed this fall for a planned theatrical release in 2022, the 40th anniversary of the films of 1982. You can check out the documentary's official key art below!
