Mega Man movie coming from Nerve & Paranormal Activity directors

Though video games movies are coming at us all the time (despite middling reviews and box office), some iconic franchises like “The Legend of Zelda” and “Metroid” have yet to be given massive, live-action adaptations. That’s about to change – for one beloved series at least – as Fox is preparing to bring the iconic “Mega Man” series to the big screen. So get your arm canons ready!

THR got the exclusive that 20th Century Fox and Chernin Entertainment will bring the character Mega Man to the big screen, and are currently closing a deal with directors Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost to write and direct the film. The film will also be produced by HEROES actor Masi Oka, and word is the studio has been working for a few years to get the rights to the franchise, and are now ready to side-scroll into production.

The directorial duo made a splash with the terrifying online-dating documentary CATFISH back in 2010, and have since parlayed that into a successful career by taking on PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3 and 4, and most recently the Dave Franco/Emma Roberts thriller, NERVE.

As for the lead character, Mega Man has been a staple of the video game world going all the way back to 1987 when Capcom released the first entry in the series. The series has since gone on to spawn 50 different titles across numerous platforms, altogether selling 30 million copies worldwide. The character has also appeared in cartoons, comic books, and in several editions of our Awesome Art feature.

Of all the major gaming franchises like Mario, Donkey Kong, and Zelda, Mega Man was the one I never got a lot of opportunities to play. Between that and the fact this is a video game movie (undeniably the unluckiest genre) I can't say I'm jumping for joy over the prospect of the movie. Schulman and Joost have had better luck transitioning into mainstream movies than most documentary filmmakers, but I don't know if they're the ones to deliver a great video game adaptation. Time will tell I suppose, and in the coming months look for the key words "Mega Man" and "shared universe."
