This summer will offer a bevy of new sequels for moviegoers, but the one that has fans the most revved-up is CARS 3. A third trailer for the movie has dropped, and the sequel finds series star Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) racing a car he’s never faced before, and one who is outfitted with state-of-the-art technology and blue lights to make him look like a shooting star (Armie Hammer). McQueen then must go back to his roots if he’s ever to win a race again. Que the ROCKY inspired montage!
This seems like Pixar’s latest attempt to cash in on people’s nostalgia, because beyond that, and the massive amount of money these movies make in merchandising, I can’t see a reason for it existing. The last two cars movies are the worst reviewed of Pixar's canon, and CARS 2 was among the lowest grossing (domestically speaking). It seems like compared to INCREDIBLES 2 and TOY STORY 4 this is the least anticipated of all the upcoming Pixar sequels, but at least those are lights at the end of this tunnel.
CARS 3 drives into theaters June 16.
