After 12 years of fans begging and pleading for some sort of follow-up to DEADWOOD after HBO didn’t continue with the series years ago, we are finally getting the long-gestating movie with the original cast returning to their roles. The show's leading men, Ian McShane and Timothy Olyphant, are returning as Al Swearengen and Seth Bullock, and now EW has gotten their hands on the first images of the two tough guys back in the saddle after all these years.
The first image is of McShane as Swearengen in The Gem saloon not having aged a day and appearing to be giving someone a stare that no living person should want to be on the receiving end of. After that is Olyphant as Bullock, who is sporting one fine mustache and some new duds, taking on the mantle of a U.S. Marshall. If you were wondering if these are men that should be f**ked with, the answer is no…no they shouldn’t.
These are just two of the characters in the movie, with series regulars Molly Parker, John Hawkes, Anna Gunn, Brad Dourif, William Sanderson, Kim Dickens and Gerald McRaney returning. Set in 1889, series creator David Milch has written the script and recurring director Daniel Minahan is directing. Here's the plot synopsis for the movie:
The indelible characters of the series are reunited after 10 years to celebrate South Dakota’s statehood. Former rivalries are reignited, alliances are tested and old wounds are reopened, as all are left to navigate the inevitable changes that modernity and time have wrought.
The movie is set for 2019, and it should provide some closure for fans who were left jaded after the series was canceled in 2006 after three seasons on HBO. We still don't know if the movie will show exclusively on HBO or will have some sort of theatrical run, but either way fans of the series will be tuning in. The actors look great in their old roles, and this should be the start of a wave of photos showing the rest of the cast back in late 19th-century wardrobe, so be sure to stay tuned for all your DEADWOOD needs and desires.
The DEADWOOD movie arrives in 2019.
