Warner Bros. has given THE CONJURING and INSIDIOUS director James Wan's new horror movie MALIGNANT an August 2020 release date. And today we learned that ANNABELLE COMES HOME and GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE actress Mckenna Grace has joined the cast.
The film sports an impressive cast including Annabelle Wallis (ANNABELLE), George Young (CONTAINMENT), Jake Abel (SUPERNATURAL), Maddie Hasson (GOD BLESS AMERICA), Michole Briana White (ENCINO MAN), Jacqueline McKenzie (Netflix's PINE GAP), and Ingrid Bisu (THE NUN).
As you can imagine, plot details are currently being kept under wraps. But that said, Wan has said:
I’m super excited to go back to my indie roots with this hard-R thriller. An original horror idea (not a reboot/remake or anything based on existing IP) with old school, practical effects and no giant, blue screen sets. That’s all I’ll say for now."
It's written by Akela Cooper (THE NUN 2, HELL FEST) and JT Petty (HELLBENDERS, THE BURROWERS) from a story by Wan and Bisu.
On top of directing this New Line horror movie, Wan will also produce the film through his Atomic Monster banner with Michael Clear. The film is being independently financed through Starlight Media and Midas Innovation, who will retain distribution rights in China. The plan is for Wan to shoot the film in Los Angeles and then move into pre-production on AQUAMAN 2 in 2020. James Wan's MALIGNANT will open on August 14, 2020.
