Even before the series finished airing, there were rumblings of a Sons of Anarchy spinoff, and now EW has learned that creator Kurt Sutter and FX are "in the preliminary stages of developing a new show set in the Northern California motorcycle club scene." The series will focus on the Mayans, the Oakland-based motorcycle club and SAMCRO rivals, however there's no other details on the project, like when it will be set or which SOA stars might reprise their roles for the show.
Fox 21 Television Studios and FX Productions will co-produce the spinoff, and Kurt Sutter and his team are reportedly searching for a showrunner, since Sutter is going to be a little busy with his new series, The Bastard Executioner. I've probably seen a total of twelve episodes of Sons of Anarchy, and although I thought it had its moments, I didn't fall in love with the show like other people did. Are you down for a SOA spinoff about the Mayans?
Here's what Sutter had to say about the new show:
The Mayan Project is very much in the infancy stages. I will be co-creating with another writer who will run the show if it moves forward.

I hate the "spinoff" label. Makes it feel like a cheesy procedural. It's not that. It's a cheesy drama.

Although the Mayan Project may intersect with SOA charters, it will be a very different show. Tone, pace, storytelling, will be unique.

Mayan Project won't take place in NoCal. That steps on SOA mythology. Although I'd love to find a way to use my brother, @EmilioRivera48

The Kurt Sutter-penned boxing drama SOUTHPAW is still playing in theaters, and his The Bastard Executioner will premiere on FX on September 15, 2015.
