Matthew Vaughn will produce Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four reboot. Is an X-Men crossover movie on the horizon?

CHRONICLE director Josh Trank has been working hard to come up with a FANTASTIC FOUR movie that will wash the bitter taste of the first two films in the series out of our collective mouths. The Tim Story movies are quite possibly the worst of the modern superhero films. Bringing Trank on board was a move meant to bring some knowledge of the genre and a bit of edge, both clearly on display in CHRONICLE.

But, things may be getting even better for the project. Mark Millar, who was brought on board to oversee all Marvel properties at Fox, tweeted the news that Matthew Vaughn would be producing the new FANTASTIC FOUR movie. Trank is still directing, but Vaughn will lend guidance to the project. Vaughn is simultaneously producing X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST for which he was previously set to direct and is now being helmed by Bryan Singer.

This move clearly suggests that Millar and Fox are getting their ducks in a row for some sort of AVENGERS-type crossover with the properties they have under their control. Could we be getting a FANTASTIC FOUR vs X-MEN movie in the near future? The possibility is clearly in play now, otherwise why gain consistency across all series as they seem to be doing?

Just to get the rumor mill churning, the X-Men and Fantastic Four did come into direct conflict during a 4 comic arc in 1987. The comic concluded the “Mutant Massacre” storyline in which Kitty Pryde, Colossus and Nightcrawler were all critically injured by the Marauders, a group of mutant terrorists. This led to the Britain-based super-team known as Excalibur. I’m not saying that is where Millar is headed, but don’t count it out just yet.

The rebooted FANTASTIC FOUR is slated to be released in 2015.
