The True Detective reunion is happening, but it won’t be filled with gruesome murders this time around. It’s been reported that Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are set to reunite for a new comedy series for Apple TV+.
The untitled half-hour comedy series is being developed by David West Read (The Big Door Prize) and will find the Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson playing fictional versions of themselves. In real life, the pair have been great friends for years, but the series will put that friendship to the test “when their combined families attempt to live together on Matthew’s ranch in Texas.” The Apple TV+ logline describes the ten-episode series as “a heartfelt odd couple love story revolving around the strange and beautiful bond between Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.” I’m down.
Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson will executive produce the comedy series alongside David West Read, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Matt Thunell, Bill Bost, and Jeremy Plager. True Detective was far from the first time that the pair have worked together, as they also appeared in Welcome to Hollywood, EDtv, and Surfer Dude.
Woody Harrelson was recently seen in Champions, a sports comedy from Bobby Farrelly. He plays a temperamental minor-league basketball coach who must coach a team of players with intellectual disabilities as community service following an arrest. You can check out a review of Champions from our own Chris Bumbray right here. Matthew McConaughey’s last role found him reprising his voice-role of Buster Moon in Sing 2.
We’ve also got the next installment of True Detective coming up with True Detective: Night Country. The new series stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis and picks up “after the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, as the six men that operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.” The series doesn’t have an official release date yet, but is expected later this year.
