Matthew McConaughey Free State of Jones Gary Ross

Ten years ago Matthew McConaughey starred in the critically panned romantic comedy FAILURE TO LAUNCH alongside Sarah Jessica Parker. FAILURE TO LAUNCH. Sarah Jessica Parker. What a difference ten years can make. The so-called McConaissance didn't really even kick off until until five years ago which makes McConaughey's transformation all the more impressive. With films like MUD, KILLER JOE, DALLAS BUYERS CLUB, and INTERSTELLAR under his belt, McConaughey has become an actor who I know I can always get excited about when I see his name attached to a project. We'll next see Matthew McConaughey in Gary Ross' FREE STATE OF JONES, which has released a brand-new trailer featuring McConaughey's Newton Knight as he seeks to create the titular Free State of Jones

A synopsis for FREE STATE OF JONES:

Set during the Civil War, The Free State of Jones tells the story of defiant Southern farmer Newt Knight, and his extraordinary armed rebellion against the Confederacy. Banding together with other small farmers, and with the assistance of local slaves, Knight launched an uprising that led Jones County, Mississippi to secede from the Confederacy, creating a Free State of Jones. His marriage to a former slave, Rachel, and his subsequent establishment of a mixed race community was unique in the post-war South. Knight continued his struggle into Reconstruction, which distinguished him as a compelling, if controversial, figure of defiance long beyond the War.

FREE STATE OF JONES is set for a June 24, 2016 release.
