Thankfully we won't have to endure a lengthy wait for Edgar Wright's next film this time around as the director is already hard at work developing a psychological horror-thriller known which will be known as LAST NIGHT IN SOHO. The film has already snagged a lead in Anya Taylor-Joy (GLASS), and now it seems that Matt Smith (MAPPLETHORPE) and Thomasin McKenzie (LEAVE NO TRACE) will be joining up as well.
Both Smith and McKenzie are in negotiations to join LAST NIGHT IN SOHO, but unfortunately, details about their characters, as well as the film itself, are vague. Collider's Jeff Sneider has added a few more potential details about the film, saying that it will be taking place in "two different time periods — the ’60s and modern day." Anya Taylor-Joy's character will apparently be the lead in the '60s with Matt Smith playing a manager of sorts to her character and Thomasin McKenzie playing a fashion student in the modern day. Do keep in mind that this isn't official. Edgar Wright has mentioned both Nicolas Roeg's DON'T LOOK NOW and Roman Polanski's REPULSION as influences. "I realised I had never made a film about central London – specifically Soho, somewhere I’ve spent a huge amount of time in the last 25 years," Wright told Empire. "With Hot Fuzz and Shaun Of The Dead you make movies about places you’ve lived in. This movie is about the London I’ve existed in." Wright co-wrote the script along with Krysty Wilson-Cairns (Penny Dreadful), and it's expected that LAST NIGHT IN SOHO will kick off production this summer.
Matt Smith will next be seen in MAPPLETHORPE on March 1, 2019, and will also take part in STAR WARS: EPISODE IX on December 20, 2019. Smith also recently signed on for a "major role" in MORBIUS, the upcoming Spider-man spinoff which stars Jared Leto in the title role. As for Thomasin McKenzie, her next big project will be Taika Waititi's dark comedy JOJO RABBIT.
