What is the soul of a bat? Since his creation more than 80 years ago, we've seen more than a few actors bring Bruce Wayne/Batman to life, and Robert Pattinson will be the next in line as he's set to play the role in Matt Reeves' Batman movie. The upcoming film will present a new vision of the Dark Knight, and co-writer Mattson Tomlin recently spoke with Den of Geek to tease what the film has in store for the character. For The Batman Bruce Wayne will be a foundation that will be explored.

Unlike the last iteration of Batman, which found Ben Affleck playing an older, more experienced version of the character, Matt Reeves' THE BATMAN will find Bruce Wayne in the early stages of his career as Batman, and Tomlin also teased that the film will explore the soul of Bruce Wayne.

It’s the early days. I think that, first of all, it’s a younger version than the most recent versions that we’ve seen. I think that Matt Reeves as a filmmaker, if you look at any of his work, whether or not it’s Let Me In or Cloverfield or the Planet of the Apes movies, he’s always coming from a point of emotion, it’s never the big action thing. It’s always, what is this character’s soul?

"I think that really looking at Batman as somebody who has gone through this trauma," Tomlin continued, "and then everything that he’s doing is then a reaction to that, rather than shy away from that, I think this film leans into that in some very fun and surprising ways." Much like every other production out there, THE BATMAN was forced to halt shooting due to COVID-19 earlier this year, but should be able to get back underway soon.

In addition to Robert Pattinson, THE BATMAN also stars Zoë Kravitz (Big Little Lies) as Catwoman, Paul Dano (SWISS ARMY MAN) as The Riddler, Jeffrey Wright (NO TIME TO DIE) as Commissioner Gordon, Andy Serkis (STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI) as Alfred Pennyworth, John Turturro (The Night Of) as Carmine Falcone, Colin Farrell (THE GENTLEMEN) as Penguin, and Peter Sarsgaard (THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN) as DA Gil Colson. THE BATMAN is slated to hit theaters on October 1, 2021.
