As we know, the COVID-19 pandemic has affected just about every aspect of our lives; stores have closed, toilet-paper is scarce, and we're seeing much more of our homes than we likely have in years. When it comes to Hollywood, production on just about every movie and TV show has come to a halt, and that includes Matt Reeves' THE BATMAN, which had been shooting in the U.K. when everything went to hell.
At the time, Warner Bros. announced that production on THE BATMAN would go on a "two-week hiatus," and Matt Reeves confirmed on Twitter today that everything has indeed been shut down.
Yes, we have shut down till it is safe for us all to resume… Everyone safe for the moment, thank you for asking, and stay safe too… https://t.co/wDhlYtphlm

As that initial two-week hiatus is nearly at its end, I think it's safe to say that it will be a while longer before Matt Reeves returns to the world of the Dark Knight. Reeves' tweet states that they'll remain shut down until it is safe for the cast and crew to resume filming, and given just how crazy things seem to be at the moment, it's hard to tell exactly when that will be.
THE BATMAN stars Robert Pattinson (THE LIGHTHOUSE) as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Zoë Kravitz (Big Little Lies) as Catwoman, Paul Dano (SWISS ARMY MAN) as The Riddler, Jeffrey Wright (NO TIME TO DIE) as Commissioner Gordon, Andy Serkis (STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI) as Alfred Pennyworth, Colin Farrell (DUMBO) as Penguin, John Turturro (The Night Of) as Carmine Falcone, and Peter Sarsgaard (THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN) as DA Gil Colson. We still don't know all that much about THE BATMAN at this stage, but Matt Reeves has teased that it will finally do justice to Batman's reputation of the World's Greatest Detective.
It’s very much a point of view-driven, noir Batman tale. It’s told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it’s going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional. It’s more Batman in his detective mode than we’ve seen in the films. The comics have a history of that. He’s supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, and that’s not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been. I’d love this to be one where when we go on that journey of tracking down the criminals and trying to solve a crime, it’s going to allow his character to have an arc so that he can go through a transformation.
THE BATMAN is slated for a June 25, 2021 release.
