Back in October, we brought you word that George Clooney was in negotiations to helm SUBURBICON from a script by Joel and Ethan Coen. Now Deadline has learned the film will indeed be Clooney's next directorial effort, and that he's in talks with Matt Damon, Julianne Moore and Josh Brolin to star.
There's no word on the roles Damon, Moore and Brolin are up for, and specific story details still haven't been released, but the project has been described as 1950s-set "noir drama in the vein of the Coens’ breakout film BLOOD SIMPLE." Clooney is producing alongside his Smokehouse Pictures partner Grant Heslov and Joel Silver through his Silver Pictures Entertainment, and Sony Pictures is reportedly the frontrunner to distribute. Production on SUBURBICON will begin next October.
Although I haven't enjoyed all of Clooney's work as a director, I still think he's a very solid filmmaker, and I'm definitely interested in learning more about SUBURBICON.
The Coen brothers' HAIL, CAESAR!, starring Clooney and Brolin, opens on February 5, 2016, while Damon's next Jason Bourne adventure is out on July 29, 2016, and Moore can be seen next on the big screen in Rebecca Miller's MAGGIE'S PLAN, which has been scheduled to be released on May 20, 2016.
