Children of the 80s, rejoice! Of all the cartoons that aired in that wonderful era, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe remains one that has always thrived in the animated format. While comics and a live-action film have never captured the wonderful world of Eternia, that is finally going to change. Thanks to geek supreme and all-around pop culture icon Kevin Smith, Netflix’s new series Masters of the Universe: Revelation is arriving to recapture what made the original series so great.
Here’s the synopsis.
A radical return to Eternia, Revelation is a direct sequel series to the classic era of Masters of the Universe. Featuring fan favorites He-Man, Orko, Cringer, and Man-At-Arms, the story pits our heroic warriors, and guardians of Castle Grayskull against Skeletor, Evil-Lyn, Beast-Man and the vile legions of Snake Mountain. But after a ferocious final battle forever fractures Eternia, it’s up to Teela to solve the mystery of the missing Sword of Power in a race against time to prevent the end of the Universe! Her journey will uncover the secrets of Grayskull at last. This is the epic He-Man and the Masters of the Universe saga fans have waited 25 years to see!
A few weeks back, I was privileged to speak with Smith himself about his inspiration for continuing the original storylines from the 1980s series while delivering a tale that upends expectations and yet staying true to the source material. From the casting of the legendary Mark Hamill as Skeletor to shifting the character focus, Kevin Smith’s passion for telling this new chapter in the He-Man mythos is apparent in our interview. Check it out above and I am sure you will feel as much excitement for this show as I did.
Masters of the Universe: Revelation Part 1 premieres July 23rd on Netflix.
