Level 33 Entertainment will be giving the award-winning supernatural cult slasher Mask of the Devil a digital and VOD release on January 13th – and with that date just a couple weeks away, we have gotten our hands on a trailer for the film! Check it out in the embed above and see whether or not Mask of the Devil looks like a movie you’d like to watch in the first month of the new year.
Directed and produced by Richard Rowntree and Matthew Davies, Mask of the Devil is said to be “a unique mix of supernatural horror and dark comedy.” Here’s the synopsis: A cursed tribal mask turns up on the set of an adult film and finds the perfect conduit to channel its evil: a young woman named Mary must battle the ancient evil as it unleashes unimaginable carnage on the unsuspecting cast and crew.
A press release also included this version of the synopsis: Africa, 1878. A group of white mercenaries attempt to steal a tribal mask, unwittingly releasing an ancient evil. In present day, the mask is purchased as a prop by a dysfunctional band of adult filmmakers. When a fiery young woman named Mary accepts a job with these low-rent wannabes, the ancient evil finds the perfect conduit and unleashes unimaginable carnage on the unsuspecting cast and crew.
The film stars Nicole Katherine Riddell (White Sky), Kemal Yildirim (Wastelands), David Robert Lenik (The Curse of Halloween Jack), Martin W. Payne (Pandemonium), Alexander Nathan Woods (Tales from the Great War), and Kemi Kentebe (Quentin Quarantine).
Rowntree wrote the screenplay. He and Davies produced Mask of the Devil with Lee Wignall and Christopher Foulser. Rowntree previously directed Dogged and Nefarious.
The awards Mask of the Devil has won include the “Outstanding Off Beat Cinema” award at the Buffalo Dreams Fantastic Film Festival, multiple jury prizes (including Best Horror Feature and Best Horror Comedy) from the Cyprus Horror Society, and Best International Feature at the Shawna Shea Film Festival.
