Mary Elizabeth Winstead (SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD), everyone’s favorite girlfriend, has signed on to star in Dan Trachtenberg‘s VALENCIA opposite the previously cast John Goodman. The project is coming from J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot and Paramount Pictures’ Insurge division and thus not a lot of details are available at this time. Along with the casting news, Variety was able to divulge some more plot information for the film which is expected to begin filming this fall.
Here is what we know so far:
The majority of the movie takes place in an underground cellar, and revolves around a young woman who wakes up in the cellar after a severe car accident and fears she has been abducted. Her captor, a doomsday prepper, tells her he saved her life and that there has been a terrible chemical attack that has left the outside uninhabitable. She does not know what to believe and as tensions rise, she decides she must escape, regardless of the terrors that await outside.
As I mentioned when Goodman came on board, the plot seems to take a few pointers from Trachtenberg’s short film Portal: No Escape (watch that here). So far the cast is perfect; Goodman is one of my favorite actors of all time and Winstead, beyond being incredibly hot, is also a great talent. She has shown on several occasions her range in comedies like Pilgrim, dramas like SMASHED or horror movies like THE THING. I’m very much intrigued by this project, it sounds like it could be a lot of fun for the two stars.
The screenplay was originally titled THE CELLER but has been going by VALENCIA since Bad Robot became got involved. So we will stick with that for now.
