Marvel’s The Inhumans will be coming to IMAX and ABC as a TV series in 2017

It's been several years since Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige announced that the INHUMANS would be a part of the third phase of Marvel's Cinematic Universe but, after several delays, the project was pulled from their schedules earlier this year. Will we ever get to see The Inhumans on the big-screen? Yes we will, and sooner than we thought, but as with most things, there's a twist. Marvel Television and Disney/ABC Television Group announced today that they have green-lit a new Marvel TV series which will bring The Inhumans to life on some of the biggest screens in the world.

Marvel's The Inhumans, as the series will be called, will "explore the never-before-told epic adventure of Black Bolt and the royal family." The new series will be filmed entirely with IMAX digital cameras and the first two episodes will run worldwide exclusively in IMAX theaters for two weeks in the beginning of September 2017. After which the series will premiere on ABC in the fall as a weekly show with exclusive content that can only be seen on the network. That's how they get ya. What does this mean for the INHUMANS movie? Just a few weeks ago Kevin Feige told /Film that he believes that the "Inhumans will happen for sure" but that he didn't know when. He added that as Marvel begins to move into Phase 4 that it "could happen as a movie" and that he thinks "it would be super cool." There's no official word on whether this new series sinks the INHUMANS movie, but it certainly doesn't look good.

Ben Sherwood, co-chairman, Disney Media Networks and president, Disney|ABC Television Group said:

This unprecedented alliance represents a bold, innovative approach to launching great TV content for a worldwide audience. It highlights Disney|ABC’s unrelenting commitment to finding new and creative ways to showcasing our very best programming and increasing global engagement and reach.

IMAX CEO, Rich Gelfond added:

This first-of-its-kind multi-platform production, distribution and marketing agreement brings together Marvel Television’s unique brand of entertainment, ABC’s unparalleled audience and IMAX’s brand and global fanboy demographic. It also takes our decades-long relationship with The Walt Disney Company to a whole new level, jointly breaking new ground in the industry. We are confident our exhibition partners will be excited to work with us on this innovative launch of a series across the IMAX network.

Take it home Marvel Television president Dan Buckley.

We're happy to see this unique deal come together, working with our partners. In an ever-changing world of distribution and consumption, it’s very exciting to be part of a groundbreaking initiative that takes us to the forefront of this evolution.

What are your thoughts on this move? Are The Inhumans better suited for television? Should the feature-film be abandoned?
