Just last month, Marvel unleashed an exciting bit of casting news, as we learned of who would be suiting up for Freeform's forthcoming CLOAK AND DAGGER television series. Tying on the billowing shadow cloak for the show will be Aubrey Joeseph as Cloak, with Olivia Hunt slipping into the tight-fitting but super-stylish body suit of Dagger.
Today, we've learned that Andrea Roth (RESCUE ME) will step into the role of Melissa Bowen, Tandy's mother. Adding to the roster is Gloria Reuben (MR. ROBOT) who will portray Tyrone's mother, Adina Johnson, with Miles Mussenden (QUEEN SUGAR), coming on as Tyrone's father – otherwise known as two parents who work hard to keep their son safe from harm. Furthermore, Carl Lundstedt (GREY'S ANATOMY) will play Liam, a man of true-grit who works beside Tandy to fight crime while acting as her boyfriend. James Saito (LIFE OF PI) will be Dr. Bernard Sanjo, Tyrone's advisor and confidant, and finally, J.D. Evermore will become Detective Connors, a secretive agent with too many skeletons clinging to his chest.
In speaking about the casting announcements, executive vice president of Programming & Development for Freeform Karey Burke had this to say,
"We are incredibly excited to be underway on our first Marvel project with such a talented group of actors that really enhance the world that our Cloak & Dagger live in."
Adding to Burkes remarks, executive producer and showrunner Joe Pokaski added,
"It’s been important to us from day one that ‘Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger’ is about character and emotion above all. We’re so excited to have assembled a murderers’ row of talented actors who can execute on that, and then some."
Like the planned adaptation of Marvel's RUNAWAYS series, CLOAK AND DAGGER is another "left field" project from Marvel's televised universe that I am seriously excited to check out. I haven't read much featuring the adventures of Tyrone and Tandy, but whenever they have entered the fray, both characters have added to the stories in a big way. There's this cool, otherwordly deal that follows them whereever they go, and in a time when comic book romances are rare, I like the idea of their partnership making a splash.
With Gina Prince-Bythewood set to direct the first episode, CLOAK AND DAGGER is expected to hit ABC's youth-oriented network, Freeform, some time in late 2018.
