While the Marvel panels for THOR: THE DARK WORLD and GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY were a big success at Comic Con, the lack of reveals regarding any Phase Three films left many fans wondering if something would be announced at Disney’s D23 Expo in August. Marvel honcho Kevin Feige has set himself up with the last few years of Comic Cons being the place for major announcements about future films in the universe. Hell, it was where we started really understanding these guys had a plan for these films and were not flying by the seat of their pants.
But, it looks like development is trumping news these days as Marvel is hard at work developing their next round of properties. All we know is that ANT-MAN will usher in the Phase Three films in 2015 right after THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON closes out the second. So, when will we find out what comes next? According to Feige:
“It would probably be, at the earliest, a year from now [in 2014].”
So, that means San Diego Comic Con 2014 will likely be where we find out if Doctor Strange, Black Panther, The Inhumans, or maybe even Daredevil will be getting their solo films. We may also hear about third chapters for Captain America, Thor, and The Avengers. But, expect silence until then.
Marvel is taking a calculated risk with GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY more than any of their other projects. Come August 1, 2014, they may finally feel more comfortable with where things are going and if their risk pays off. Until then, we will sit and continue to speculate and await the stories we know will break between now and then, such as who will voice Groot and Rocket Raccoon and whether Vin Diesel is playing Thanos or Vision.
