Marvel set for San Diego Comic-Con after sitting out last year

After sitting out last year to much fan anguish, Marvel will be returning to the hallowed Hall H at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, perhaps with a bevy of content to win over the whole event. Deadline confirmed Marvel’s appearance, which will be a big deal given they have kept their future slate of movies under super duper lock and key as AVENGERS: ENDGAME brought some things to a close while setting the stage for much, much more.

Now that we know they will be in attendance, it’s all a matter of going over what they could be bringing to the stage. The first and most likely scenario is some sort of tease for the upcoming BLACK WIDOW solo movie starring Scarlett Johansson, which started filming recently. The movie from director Cate Shortland may not have enough done for a full trailer, but perhaps a short reel and some concept art isn’t out of the cards.

Currently held by two unknown titles, Marvel has secured two release slots next year for the first weeks of May and November, with WIDOW speculated to take the first slot. The other is a mystery, with some believing it will belong to the upcoming movie THE ETERNALS, centering on God-like beings in the Marvel universe. Directed by Chloe Zhao and set to star Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden and Kumail Nanjiani (with Keanu Reeves rumored for a role), not much else has been reported on the movie but it is expected to begin production by the end of the year, and there could be a short reveal of info at Comic-Con.

There’s also the matter of some of the new series Marvel and Disney have planned for the Disney+ streaming service. That includes shows around Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Scarlet Witch and Vision (Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany) and around Falcon and Winter Soldier (Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan). We already got the smallest of glimpses at Hiddleston in the Loki series, so perhaps some footage for that is the best bet at Comic-Con.

The last time Marvel brought their stuff to Comic-Con was in 2017, and it was with a teaser for AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR, which was exclusively for the crowd and was not shown to the rest of the public. They sat out 2018 to keep details around the upcoming CAPTAIN MARVEL and AVENGERS: ENDGAME under wraps, but by the time Comic-Con comes around again in July the latest movie, SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME will be out and Marvel will have nothing left to do but tease what they have planned, which also includes the Shang-Chi movie, GUARDIANS 3 and DOCTOR STRANGE 2.

We learned today that ENDGAME will be back in theaters next weekend with a post-credits scene, so maybe that will reveal some new details ahead of Comic-Con. We have no clue what they have in store, but Marvel's future has never been so cloaked in mystery and potential, so be sure to stick around for whatever roof-blowing announcements they make in the next month.
