Marvel puts The Eternals into motion with Black List writers to pen script

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

While audiences are still dealing with the fallout of AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR, Marvel Studios is busy crafting the next stage of their massive franchise, which could very well include The Eternals, the Jack Kirby-created series which follows an evolutionary offshoot of humanity created as an experiment by the Celestials.

We've been hearing rumblings of THE ETERNALS recently, and now THR reports that Marvel Studios is moving ahead with development on the film by tasking Matthew and Ryan Firpo with penning the script for the cosmic Marvel epic. The pair's spec script RUIN, which deals with a nameless ex-Nazi captain who navigates the ruins of post-WWII Germany to atone for his crimes during the war by hunting down and killing the surviving members of his former SS death squad, topped the 2017 Black List. In the comics, the sage of The Eternals "began millions of years ago when the cosmic beings known as the Celestials genetically experimented on humans, creating the super-powered and near-immortal beings and a more monstrous off-shoot known as the Deviants. The two races moved behind the scenes throughout human history while also engaging in Game of Thrones-style cosmic powerplays." With many Marvel actors taking their final curtain call with AVENGERS 4, the studio will need new and even more impressive franchises to keep the Marvel Cinematic Universe trucking along until we're all dust in the wind.
