There is something really chilling about a well-made psychological horror movie. Usually when you hear the word horror you immediately think supernatural, monsters, and gore. But, a truly well made horror movie doesn’t need anything aside from interesting characters in an unsettling situation. THE TWILIGHT ZONE remains the benchmark of true psychological horror which is why even decades later those episodes are still as scary as ever.
A FIELD IN ENGLAND looks to be following Rod Serling’s template from the looks of this bizarre and intriguing trailer. Carrying Martin Scorsese‘s seal of approval in calling it “a stunning cinematic experience”, A FIELD IN ENGLAND looks like no film I can think of. Shot in stark black and white, it looks and feels almost like it could be a forgotten episode of THE TWILIGHT ZONE. Director Ben Wheatley, best known for the Edgar Wright produced SIGHTSEERS and the letter U in last year’s THE ABCS OF DEATH has created something pretty cool.
The story takes place during the Civil War in 17th-Century England and follows a small group of deserters fleeing from a raging battle through an overgrown field. They are captured by an alchemist (Michael Smiley), who forces the group to aid him in his search to find a hidden treasure that he believes is buried in the field. Crossing a vast mushroom circle, which provides their first meal, the group quickly descend into a chaos of arguments, fighting and paranoia, and, as it becomes clear that the treasure might be something other than gold, they slowly become victim to the terrifying energies trapped inside the field.
A FIELD IN ENGLAND will hit theaters and VOD simultaneously on February 7th.
