Hearing the names Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese in the same breath brings up a whole slew of cinema memories. Whether it be CAPE FEAR, RAGING BULL, or TAXI DRIVER, fans have their favorite collaborations. But, it is the gangster movies they made together, GOODFELLAS and CASINO, that most fans hold an eternal place for. We have hoped beyond hope that they would reunite for another film someday. Scorsese has long been developing a movie called THE IRISHMAN that would feature De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci and tell the story of Frank Sheeran and his involvement with the Teamsters and the death of Jimmy Hoffa.
At a recent press conference for THE FAMILY, which was produced by Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro was asked about the chance to reunite with his frequent director. The legendary actor said the following:
“I have another gangster film I’m gonna do with Scorsese and it’s a very interesting one.” he said. “We’re preparing it. We have a script and Marty has another film he’s doing before so it won’t be for a while.” He even admitted they were contemplating taking their working relationship from the screen to the page. “Once Scorsese and I were thinking about doing a book together, and we might still I don’t know, but it’s as far as it went.”
Based on De Niro’s comments, I would assume that next project Scorsese will be working on for a while is the Japan set SILENCE with THE IRISHMAN coming right after, assuming that is the same gangster film. Either way, seeing these two back on the same track is going to be exciting. Whether or not Pesci or Pacino are still involved remains to be seen. I just want to know if Leonardo DiCaprio, Scorsese’s modern day De Niro, is going to be involved in this one. That would be amazing.
