Say what you will about WHITE CHICKS but the film had developed a nice little cult following since its original release back in 2004. Critics weren't in love with the film's antics but the movie was financially successful, grossing $113 million worldwide on a $37 million budget. One of the film's stars, Marlon Wayans, has been eyeing more serious roles lately with his latest, ON THE ROCKS, hitting streaming last Friday, but that hasn't stopped him from thinking about a WHITE CHICKS sequel and he definitely wants the film to happen.
Marlon Wayans spoke with "People Magazine" about the possibility of a WHITE CHICKS sequel happening and he thinks it might just be the film we need right now during these very uncertain times:
"People always say, 'Could you do a White Chicks 2 now?' I think definitely. A good joke is when you can make the people you're parodying laugh. Who loves White Chicks the most? White chicks. In this environment, in this climate, we all need something to laugh at about ourselves."
Talk of a WHITE CHICKS sequel kicked into high gear last year when one of the film's co-stars, Terry Crews, claimed on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen that a sequel was in the works. According to Crews at the time, he had collaborated with Shawn Wayans on the project, and the sequel sounded almost like a done deal. Soon after, Marlon debunked those claims by telling his followers on Instagram that no deal was yet in place. Wayans expanded on the Crews sequel talk further by promising fans when there is something to share, they will know:
"Terry's lying, but I ain't going to say that to him because he's too buff and I don't want to get beat up… We're working toward it. I'll let you guys know when it happens, happens. But we're moving slowly toward it… I like doing movies where I'm a Black man. It's a lot less makeup."
WHITE CHICKS was directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans and starred Marlon Wayans and his brother Shawn Wayans as two Black men working as FBI agents who go undercover as white women to crack a kidnapping case. As I said, critics weren't too enthused when the film was released but in the years since its release, WHITE CHICKS has developed a large cult following with the film gaining new fans due to its repeated airings on television. It's one of those quotable movies that is embraced by moviegoers that first saw it in 2004 and from a new generation that has discovered it in the years since. It's by no mean high art but I've been known to watch it when I want a quick laugh and it definitely delivers.
