Remember the 2007 thriller SHOOTER starring Mark Wahlberg and directed by Antoine Fuqua? Probably not, but it was a decent action flick with some nice scenes featuring Kate Mara. It grossed just under $100 million, meaning the first novel in the series by Stephen Hunter would not get any big screen sequels.
As for the small screen, that is another story. Deadline reports that SHOOTER will be coming to TNT, produced by Wahlberg himself. The series will be written by John Hlavin, a veteran of FX’s THE SHIELD and UNDERWORLD: AWAKENING.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the film, based on the novel Point of Impact by Stephen Hunter, centered on a marksman, former U.S. Marine Scout Sniper Bob Lee Swagger (Wahlberg), who is coaxed back into action only to be framed for murder and goes on the run.
The six volume novel series provides a good deal of background to further develop the character of Bob The Nailer, while original scripts should be easy to produce as well. I immediately get the feeling this show will be a cross between the recent Sean Bean series LEGENDS and the USA spy show BURN NOTICE. Neither is fantastic, but both are fun diversions. SHOOTER could be an enjoyable ride.
