Although TRIPLE FRONTIER has been losing directors and actors at an alarming rate, the J.C. Chandor directed thriller refuses to stay down. The film was once set to be helmed by Kathryn Bigelow with actors such as Tom Hanks, Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Will Smith expressing interest. It was intended to be Bigelow's follow-up to THE HURT LOCKER, but once ZERO DARK THIRTY moved forward, the film was put on hold and Bigelow eventually left it behind altogether. J.C. Chandor (ALL IS LOST) then took over the film which Tom Hardy, Channing Tatum, and Mahershala Ali were set to star in, but a month before production was to begin, both Hardy and Tatum departed the project, as did Paramount Pictures. Netflix then revived the project and were looking at Ben Affleck to take the lead. Affleck was never officially attached to TRIPLE FRONTIER, but last week it was revealed that the actor has dropped out of the film in order to take some time to focus on his wellness and his family.
As TRIPLE FRONTIER seems to have more lives than a cat, we've got more news about the latest group of actors circling the project. Deadline reports that Mark Wahlberg is now in talks to replace Ben Affleck, and that Charlie Hunnam (KING ARTHUR: LEGEND OF THE SWORD), Garrett Hedlund (TRON: LEGACY), and Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones) may be joining up as well. Will this group prove to be the charm? Netflix better hope so, as they're apparently looking to start shooting in August in both Hawaii and Colombia. Despite it's long and troubled history, we don't know all that much about TRIPLE FRONTIER other than it will be set in the "notorious border zone between Paraguay, Argentina, and Brazil where the Iguazu and Parana rivers converge — making “la triple frontera” difficult to monitor and a haven for organized crime."
Mark Wahlberg's TRANSFORMERS: THE LAST KNIGHT debuted just last month and the actor will next be seen in DADDY'S HOME 2 on November 10, 2017. The comedy sequel will find Wahlberg reuniting with Will Ferrell once again, but this time, the two fathers will find themselves dealing with their own fathers, played by Mel Gibson and John Lithgow, during the holiday season.
