“I just finished the script on the Witchboard remake. I am a huge fan of the original film, especially with Tawny Kitaen in it, so I was really excited to come aboard the project. And it looks like it’s most likely going to be the next movie I will be directing.”
When asked about his approach, he had this to say: “It’s so hard to walk the remake line in the industry, especially when you enjoy the original film so much, so I will admit I had some doubts about coming on board the project at first. But then I spoke to the producers to get a feel of what they wanted to do with it, and after talking to them about their intentions, I felt a little more comfortable coming on to write and direct the film.
“My own litmus test was to see if I thought I could bring something new to the story for a new generation of fans, and after reading the script, I think there will definitely be something for new audiences and fans of the original. Our story arc and characters are all akin to the original, but we are definitely not planning a straight shot-for-shot remake either. I wasn’t interested in redoing an already great movie so we do have a few surprises in this new one planned.”
The 1986 original is written and directed by Kevin Tenney (NIGHT OF THE DEMONS) and stars Tawny Kitaen (below), Todd Allen and Stephen Nichols. Two sequels were produced. Here is the original plot:
At a party, a guest brings out a Ouija board, and they attempt to contact a spirit he knows. The spirit does appear, but it becomes apparent to the one who brought the Ouija board that this is an evil spirit that is impersonating his spirit, and despite warnings not to use the board alone, a woman uses it alone, and becomes harassed by the evil spirit, his goal to possess her so he can walk the earth again.
