Mark Millar unveils first comic for Netflix, The Magic Order

A few months ago, Netflix acquired comic book writer Mark Millar’s Millarworld banner, hinting that some of the author's beloved creations could find their way to being movies or TV shows. Before any of that comes to fruition, the first order of business is to release a brand-new comic from Millar, and we now have our first look at the series – “The Magic Order.”

Netflix put out a release announcing the comic, which is written by Millar with artwork from Olivier Coipel ("Thor", "The Avengers"), and the first in the series will be released spring 2018 and will run for six issues. You can get a look at the cover of the first issue below and read the plot synopsis. Spoiler: it all involves magic. Whaaaaa?

We live in a world where we’ve never seen a monster and these people are the reason we sleep safely in our beds. Magic meets the mob in The Magic Order, as five families of magicians sworn to protect our world for generations must battle an enemy who’s picking them off one by one. By day they live among us as our neighbors, friends and co-workers, but by night they are the sorcerers, magicians and wizards that protect us from the forces of darkness…unless the darkness gets them first.

Millar sounds ecstatic about working with the streaming service, and went on to  the to talk about the collaboration process and getting to work with Coipel:

We wanted to make a splash with our first book for Netflix and this is it. I love dark fantasy and there’s an enormous gap in the market for something like this. Netflix hiring Olivier has also made me the happiest guy alive. I’ve been after him for almost ten years so to finally have our names in the same book is an absolute honour

Hey, I’m all for magic and darkness and death, and who knows, maybe this could become an awesome Netflix series one day. I’m sure that’s the plan, to woo in comic book fans with this sweet new comic and then get them jazzed about a series. I guess the plan is working because I am very much jazzed.

"The Magic Order" hits shelves spring 2018.
