Margot Robbie has been busy with all things Harley Quinn as of late, with the first footage of her back in costume as the wacky rebel in the new movie BIRDS OF PREY (AND THE FANTABULOUS EMANCIPATION OF ONE HARLEY QUINN) dropping last month. With all the other Quinn-related projects in the works, it was once thought she would not have time to appear in the new SUICIDE SQUAD movie from James Gunn (GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY), but new reports claim this is not the case and she will be back with her main squad for new shenanigans.

The report comes from Forbes, who in publishing an expansive piece on the future of the DC Cinematic Universe first reported that Robbie was not set to appear in Gunn’s new movie, aptly titled THE SUICIDE SQUAD. However, in a recent update, they heard from sources that news about her not being involved was “out of date,” and that she will, in fact, be in the new movie.

While there has been speculation that THE SUICIDE SQUAD could be a reboot of the gang since Warner Bros. has shifted priorities with their DC slate since the release of the first 2016 movie, the inclusion of Robbie’s Quinn would indicate their sticking with the main cast of actors as the first, which includes Will Smith as Deadshot. None of that is confirmed, but while the movie has its fair share of detractors the one thing most people seem to agree on is the solid work from the majority of the cast, so it’s stands to reason WB would have no problem keeping them around.
Robbie’s Quinn may be back for the next SQUAD movie, but one more appearance as the character has hit the scrap pile – the planned movie with her and Jared Leto’s Joker character. The Bonnie and Clyde-style movie with more face paint and graffiti was announced some time ago, but the report details that movie has been nixed, as well as a proposed Joker solo movie starring Leto. A separate Joker movie starring Joaquin Phoenix and directed by Todd Phillips is currently in the works and set for October this year.
Warner Bros. and DC seem to be leaning heavily into Robbie's Quinn, and especially when it comes to SUICIDE SQUAD that's a smart move. She was the standout of the last movie and a big reason to rewatch it, and Gunn's knack for working colorful characters makes her a perfect fit for his style.
THE SUICIDE SQUAD is expected to begin production later this year.
