Avast, me hearties! Looks like Margot Robbie is ready to sail the seven seas as a successor to Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow in a new PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN adventure.
While Karen Gillan was rumored to be taking over the female-fronted reboot of the Disney franchise, this newly announced project appears to be independent of the main franchise. Robbie will reteam with Christina Hodson, who scripted DC's raucous roller coaster of a female-led superhero film BIRDS OF PREY.
Hodson, who has been a hot commodity in Hollywood having worked on BUMBLEEBEE, is also in charge of scripting DC's THE FLASH as well as BATGIRL. While BIRDS OF PREY underwhelmed at the box office, clearly the dynamic duo of Robbie and Hodson clicked enough to warrant another blockbuster round together.
While plot details are being kept in the brig until further notice, it's been reported by THR that Robbie and Hodson's new Pirates project is not intended to be a spinoff of Disney's long-running franchise, but rather a wholly new project with Robbie at the helm.
Okay, so let's get this straight, shall we? Disney's already announced PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN reboot is still preparing to set sail with Pirates scribe Ted Elliot and Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin developing the story. Meanwhile, Robbie and Hodson are teaming for their own take on the concept inspired by the long-running attraction at Disneyland. Finally, to make matters even more confusing, longtime Pirates producer Jerry Bruckheimer is on board to produce both projects. Have we got all that? Because I must admit that it took me a moment to wrap my "Friday brain" around all these details.
