Margot Robbie has portrayed Harley Quinn three times in the last five years, beginning in 2016's Suicide Squad. She was given a more solo experience in 2020's Bird of Prey and she returns once again in the upcoming release of James Gunn's The Suicide Squad. While Robbie has certainly enjoyed playing the character, the actress admits that she doesn't know how long it will be before she portrays her next.
While speaking with "Entertainment Weekly", Robbie got pretty candid about playing Harley Quinn and expressed how she was ready to take a "break" from playing the psychiatrist-turned-vigilante. While admitting that she has no plans to reprise her DCEU character in the near future, Robbie said, "I was like, 'Oof, I need a break from Harley, because she's exhausting.' I don't know when we're next going to see her."
Even though Robbie may need a break from the character, the actress admitted that she's "just as intrigued as everyone else is" about Harley Quinn's future. This could mean that Robbie isn't totally done with Harley and just needs to hit pause for a moment. Playing a character three times in five years is a bit much and she played her across two polarizing films heading into the upcoming The Suicide Squad. Robbie consistently received raves for her performances in Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey but both films left fans divided, although Birds of Prey received a much better reception from critics than the former.
Robbie has many projects on the horizon that will keep her busy as she hits the brakes on Harley Quinn. Robbie will be playing Barbie herself in Greta Gerwig's live-action film and she also has Damien Chazelle's Babylon, Ruin, and the much-buzzed-about untitled David O. Russell project. Perhaps after all of those films are done, Robbie will be ready to step back into Harley Quinn's unique brand of crazy.
