When I first saw Noah Baumbach’s THE SQUID AND THE WHALE, I was all ‘wow, that is the childhood I wish I had, growing up in Park Slope Brooklyn in the 80’s with depressed intellectuals as parents.’ If that were the case I may have grown up to be one of those depressed intellectuals myself. Instead I’m just depressed. After watching the trailer for his new film MARGOT AT THE WEDDING, I can say with full assurance that this movie will leave me wishing I had a different life too. In fact, most movies have that effect on me.
In the film, Nicole Kidman stars as Margot, who arrives in town for her sister Pauline’s wedding, to a guy played by Jack Black, who is proving his diversity as an actor more and more. Pauline is played by Jennifer Jason Leigh (Baumbach’s wife) and she and Margot butt heads, as all siblings tend to do. By the looks of the trailer, it appears as though this movie will continue along the same quirky hipster path Baumbach led us down with THE SQUID AND THE WHALE, and I’m cool with that, since I consider myself a hipster. A faux one, anyway. You can see the trailer over at Moviefone, and the pic is released on October 12.
