Marc Webb and Andrew Garfield are confirmed for the sequel to The Amazing Spider-man

Despite rumors to the contrary, Marc Webb will once again helm the adventures of Peter Parker for the sequel to this year’s THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN.

Sony revealed that Webb and Andrew Garfield are officially returning as director and star for the currently untitled sequel, which will begin production in early 2013 for its scheduled May 2, 2014 release date. The film will be produced by Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach with a screenplay from Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, and Jeff Pinkner. Those screenwriters updated a draft by James Vanderbilt, who wrote THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN.

The sequel will once again be in 3D (apparently people will still care about 3D in two years). Emma Stone is still not confirmed to return as Gwen Stacy, but I am sure that is just a formality. Columbia Pictures President Doug Belgrad had this to say regarding the announcement: “We could not be more confident in the direction we are taking this new Spider-Man storyline and we are tremendously excited to be ramping up production again with Marc at the helm and Andrew continuing on as Peter Parker. We can’t wait to share what we have in store for Peter and Spider-Man with audiences worldwide.”

Here is to hoping that since the rebooted origin is out of the way that the sequel can put more focus on Spider-man being a hero. But, if they plan on keeping the film rooted in a more realistic universe, which villain would be best suited to go against the webslinger?
