Legendary musician Trent Reznor has shared a portion of his score for David Fincher's MANK. The Nine Inch Nails frontman has been hard at work composing the music alongside his steadfast collaborator Atticus Ross, who have teamed for several of Fincher's previous films. Reznor previewed sections of the score via a "secret" website titled 'The White Wine Came Up With The Fish', which offers fans of the iconic director a 210-page slide show of stills from the upcoming film. As you make your way through the photos, Reznor's score can be heard playing in the background.
Reznor first alerted everyone to the site via Twitter:
David Fincher’s new film Mank is coming to Netflix December 4th!
Here’s a “secret” site where you can hear a first bit of our score and more (don’t tell anyone):https://t.co/JMgcT2pQgt— Trent Reznor (@trent_reznor) October 21, 2020
The score itself is truly something to behold. In addition to composing orchestral arrangements that paint a somber mental picture, Reznor and Ross also include a spirited Big Band vibe to some of the later tracks. It's the kind of score that begs for the listener to open their mind's eye to imagine smokey streets, gin-soaked floors, as well as a bit of that old razzmatazz. I'm listening to it right now, in fact, and I'd be lying if I said that I wasn't snapping my fingers along to the rhythm while trying to get this article out the door.
In MANK, 1930s Hollywood is re-evaluated through the eyes of scathing social critic and alcoholic screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz as he races to finish the screenplay of Citizen Kane for Orson Welles.
Set for a December 4, 2020 release on Netflix, MANK is Fincher's first major motion picture since 2014's GONE GIRL. Stepping into the role of Herman J. Mankiewicz is Gary Oldman, while Tom Burke will star as Orson Welles. Arliss Howard, Amanda Seyfried, Charles Dance, Tom Pelphrey, and Lily Collins all co-star.
Should you choose to check out the tease, I recommend that you turn your volume way up as the score is rather quiet at the start. After you're mesmerized by the initial sounds, feel free to adjust the knob accordingly.
