Man of Steel 2, Black Adam 2 look unlikely as the new DCU takes shape

Man of Steel 2, Henry Cavill

Although we’ve still got several major DC movies on the way, James Gunn and Peter Safran may wind up starting from scratch with their new DC Universe. With Wonder Woman 3 not moving forward, it looks like another casualty of the yet-to-be-unveiled plan could be Man of Steel 2.

Henry Cavill announced his return following a cameo in Black Adam, and it was reported that Warner Bros. was in the very early stages of developing a new Man of Steel movie, but that was before James Gunn and Peter Safran started planning their fresh approach. Cavill is also expected to make a cameo in The Flash, but sources told THR that there’s “a debate inside the studio as whether or not to keep the cameo and if its inclusion promises something that studio would have no plans on delivering.” This would mean that Henry Cavill’s return as Superman would be extremely short-lived, something that fans aren’t going to be happy about.

THR’s report states that The Flash director Andy Muschietti had expressed interest in helming Man of Steel 2, and Warner Bros. Pictures co-CEOs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy had reportedly hoped to see the “Snyderverse heroes” one more time, perhaps even culminating in another Justice League movie. It’s important to note that nothing has been finalized yet, but we probably won’t know anything for sure until the new DCU plan is revealed.

It’s also looking unlikely that Black Adam will receive a sequel after its underwhelming box-office performance. There have been battles over whether Black Adam will turn a profit or not, with some saying that it could lose $50 million, while star Dwayne Johnson tweeted that it would net over $50 million when all was said and done. The report also claims that Johnson didn’t win many fans with DC’s new management after playing up the return of Henry Cavill and his own place in the DC franchise.

Another interesting tidbit in the report concerns Jason Momoa, who could still have a role to play in the new DCU. After the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom next year, Momoa could lead another DC movie or franchise, with THR mentioning the character of Lobo as a possibility. Again, nothing has been set in stone concerning these plans, but it’s clear some big changes are in store either way.
