Meryl Streep, who’ll likely add another award to her already stacked mantle with a Golden Globe for her performance in THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA, has signed on to star in the upcoming film adaptation of the Broadway hit MAMMA MIA! (with the exclamation point being part of the title, not any indication over my excitement at this news). The film will be produced by Tom Hanks and directed by Phyllida Lloyd who directed the London and Broadway versions of the stage show. The film follows a girl who’s about to get married but has never met her father (Streep will play the titular Mamma). At the wedding, three potential paternal candidates arrive and they then break out in “Dancing Queen” and other ABBA hits for no particular reason. It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me and never received glowing critical reviews but it has proved an immense crowd pleaser both on Broadway and overseas. Streep came close to starring in New Line’s HAIRSPRAY but eventually passed making MAMMA MIA her first musical. Filming is set to begin this spring in Greece and London.
