Ten years ago, the world completely lost its marbles for a little musical called MAMMA MIA! proving WAY more people were still into ABBA than previously on record. Based on the Broadway musical, the movie made $600 million worldwide which, to put into perspective, is not that much less than what JUSTICE LEAGUE has made now. After all these years a sequel is hitting theaters with more ABBA-laced numbers for us to see, and with a new story about Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) learning that she’s pregnant, and hearing the original tale about her mom ( done in flashback with Lily James) meeting her the “three dads” from the first movie. You can watch the trailer above, and be very, very prepared to have “Mamma Mia” stuck in your head all day.
The first movie had the bubblegum-musical quality to it that, though not my cup of hot cocoa, clearly brought a lot of joy to many women looking to escape their husbands and families for a brief moment. I have the feeling the sequel waited too long to come out, and that it probably won't be as big as the first movie as a result. Summer movie season is too packed now with other stuff, although that is a reason to believe MAMMA MIA! will prove viable alternative content. I don't know, it will be interesting to see how it performs.
MAMMA MIA! HERE WE GO AGAIN hits theaters July 20, 2018.
