Mama director Andy Muschietti circling adaptation of Stephen King’s It

After many years spent developing a two-part adaptation of Stephen King's "It", True Detective director Cary Fukunaga unfortunately decided to leave the project in May after butting heads with the studio. The remake was supposed to begin filming last month in New York but that was obviously put on hold while New Line began the search for a new director.

THR reports that New Line may have finally found a replacement for Cary Fukunaga as Andy Muschietti (MAMA) is in negotiations to direct IT. New Line is reportedly still planning on keeping the adaptation separated into two parts with part one featuring the main characters as children while the second would pick up with those same characters as adults. It's unclear at this time if Will Poulter will still fill the extra large shoes of Pennywise, THR mentions that Poulter is no longer officially attached but that he could return depending on scheduling and other factors.

The script for both IT films were being handled by Cary Fukunaga and Chase Palmer, but New Line will begin searching for a new writer to tailor the script to Muschietti’s vision once negotiations with Muschietti conclude.
