Director James Wan’s latest horror film Malignant was just released on Blu-ray and DVD today (you can pick up a copy at THIS LINK), so this seems like the perfect time to share the news that Wan and Malignant star Annabelle Wallis have been discussing where they could take the story in a sequel.
When Screen Rant asked her if she and Wan have talked about a Malignant 2, Wallis confirmed,
We have. There’s plenty of ideas swirling around. We were very, very flattered by the reception and I think taken aback by the reception. So yeah, there’s lots of conversations happening.”
Scripted by Akela Cooper from a story that Wan, Cooper, and Ingrid Bisu crafted together, Malignant shows what happens when
Madison is paralyzed by shocking visions of grisly murders, and her torment worsens as she discovers that these waking dreams are in fact terrifying realities.
Wan has said that Malignant is his
take on that particular ’80s trope of storytelling where a victim starts seeing through the vision of a killer. There was a period where there were a lot of movies like that, and I’m a big fan of that particular sub-genre. Movies like The Eyes of Laura Mars. I wanted to do my own version, crossed with my love of [Brian] De Palma and [Dario] Argento and [Mario] Bava.”
Wallis, who previously worked with Wan when he produced and she starred in Annabelle, a spin-off from his film The Conjuring, was joined in the cast by Maddie Hasson (We Summon the Darkness), George Young (Containment), Michole Briana White (Dead to Me), Jacqueline McKenzie (Palm Beach), Jake Abel (Supernatural), and Ingrid Bisu (The Nun).
It appeared to me that there was kind of a split reaction of Malignant, which made sense because the movie is completely nuts. Some viewers were put off by that, while others were entertained by its over-the-top insanity. Personally, I had a lot of fun watching it. I thought the ending was satisfying enough that it could remain a standalone film, but I’d also gladly watch a sequel.
Our own JimmyO gave the film an 8/10 review you can read HERE. Would you be down for a Malignant sequel?
