Robert Stromberg, director of the 2014 fantasy epic MALEFICENT, which starred Angelina Jolie as the film's misunderstood villain, is gearing up to shoot a noir thriller called CARNIVAL for Anonymous Content, Voltage Pictures, and Bread and Circuses Entertainment.
CARNIVAL, written by Matias Caruso, revolves around a knife-throwing master who belongs to a traveling circus. While going from town to town, the character uses his deadly skills to avenge the untimely and brutal murder of his dearly departed sister. In his quest to hunt down her assailant, he enlists the aid of several unique circus performers to help see that the deed is done.
The film will be produced by Bard Dorros, Craig Flores, Mitchell Peck and Nicolas Chartier. Kristin Overn is also set to executively produce the movie. Casting for CARNIVAL is currently underway with principal photography slated to begin in the late fall of this year.
What do you all think? The setup sounds cool enough to me. And hey, if you're looking for some solid circus-style cinematic goodness, I highly recommend such films as: FREAKS, CARNIVAL OF SOULS, and Alejandro Jodorowsky's classic, SANTA SANGRE.
And for real, if you haven't seen it, MALEFICENT is actually worth checking out, if not for the elseworlds fairy tale story, it's certiainly a visual feast for the eyes. You can catch that on Blu-Ray or streaming services today.
