Making of The Shining

I have a feeling I’m not alone on this, but haven’t ‘the making of’ documentaries grown tamer and more formulaic in today’s behind-the-scenes world? There was a time when ‘making of’ documentaries were films in their own right, and captured all the chaos and passion that being on a movie set. I’m thinking specifically of HEARTS OF DARKNESS, shot by Coppola’s wife while he was making APOCALYPSE NOW. Another documentary, this time shot by the filmmaker’s daughter has surfaced on YouTube, as Vivian Kubrick films her father make THE SHINING. In the first 10 minutes alone, you have Jack being Jack and Scatman Crothers in tears, and the doc feels far more authentic than all the made-for-DVD behind-the-scenes docs we get today as special features. This one makes you feel like you’re actually on set. The film is split into four parts on Youtube and we’ve got them all for you right here.
