IT FOLLOWS is probably one of the best horror films to come out in the last ten years and it was much needed when genre fans were looking for fresh and original material. The film was the directorial debut from David Robert Mitchell and it starred Maika Monroe, who also made an impression the same year in THE GUEST which is also highly recommended I might add. IT FOLLOWS was a great critical success and moderately successful in regards to its budget versus gross ($1 million budget, $14.6 million domestic gross). Like any film that finds success, there have been whispers of a sequel and while there is nothing official, Maika Monroe says she would love to come back if it happens.
While promoting her new Quibi series The Stranger, Monroe spoke with "Comicbook.com" and revealed she would love to work with David Robert Mitchell on a sequel:
"I would absolutely love to work with David again. That would be a dream, but, you know, we'll just have to wait and see."
IT FOLLOWS hit the festival circuit in 2014 and began a legacy that has cemented it as one of the best modern-day horror films. The plot follows a young woman who is being stalked by an unknown supernatural force after a sexual encounter. IT FOLLOWS is more than just great atmosphere and tension. The film also functions as a whip-smart piece of genre filmmaking that tackles the topic of casual sex and the looming threat of a sexually transmitted disease that is told under the guise of a supernatural horror film. Monroe went on to speak of the film's influence and how proud she is to be a part of it:
"It's been a crazy ride. Being a part of It Follows, there's so many movies that have changed the horror genre, but I know that It Follows is such a massive influence and this change of the genre, which was so cool to be a part of, and so many people really connected with that film. For me, with these projects, all I can do is give the most honest performance and I don't look at it necessarily as a horror film or thriller or this or that. It's just me really falling into this character and bringing as much truth as I can so that people can really fall into the story."
I'm not even sure if David Robert Mitchell is interested in revisiting IT FOLLOWS and I'm actually happy to see it stand on its own. Some movies don't need sequels and this is one of them. It was a clever idea that was well executed and a big win for the genre. I think we should leave it at that. It's definitely still one of my favorites though and I find more to love about it with each viewing.
