Magnum P.I. could be saved by NBC or USA after its cancellation by CBS

Magnum P.I., saved, cancellation

CBS announced last month that they would be cancelling the Magnum P.I. reboot starring Jay Hernandez after four seasons. Fans were obviously a little upset, but they shouldn’t give up hope. Deadline has heard that talks are reportedly underway for NBC and/or USA Network to bring Magnum P.I. back.

Universal Television, which co-produces Magnum P.I. alongside CBS Studios, immediately began shopping the series to other networks following its cancellation. USA Network was the first to entertain the possibility of reviving the series with NBC following soon after. Deadline says that one scenario is that new episodes of Magnum P.I. could air on NBC while USA Network would run the previous seasons. Talks are obviously still underway, but any revival of Magnum P.I. would require a deal being made with CBS Studios, and those negotiations haven’t started yet. The studios have until the end of the month to come to an agreement, otherwise, Universal Television would have to extend the options on the cast. Magnum P.I. is believed to be the most-watched broadcast series to get cancelled this season, and the decision to give it the axe wasn’t made lightly.

The reboot of the classic 1980s series starring Tom Selleck follows Thomas Magnum (Hernandez), a decorated ex-Navy SEAL who, upon returning home from Afghanistan, re-purposes his military skills to become a private investigator. With help from fellow vets Theodore “TC” Calvin (Stephen Hill) and Orville “Rick” Wright (Zachary Knighton), as well as that of disavowed former MI:6 agent Juliet Higgins (Perdita Weeks), Magnum takes on the cases no one else will, helping those who have no one else to turn to.
