Netflix’s Magic: The Gathering has revealed that it’s playing with a full deck this afternoon after sharing that Brandon Routh has been tapped to lead the cast. Routh will voice the lead character of the animated series from executive producer Jeff Klein (Transformers: Prime), which is set for a 2022 debut.
Routh will lend his vocals to the role of Gideon, an unfalteringly heroic Planeswalker in the Magic: The Gathering multiverse.
According to Routh, he’s been playing Magic: The Gathering since he was 16. “I love this world and I’m very excited to be part of this animated series,” he said. Why am I not surprised? It’s a fine game, and Routh strikes me as a man of taste. According to the latest reports, scripts for the first season are already complete. Additionally, it was revealed earlier this year during Magic Showcase 2021 that Wizards of the Coast have tasked Django Wexler with penning an upcoming novel that will serve as a “fast-follow” prequel to the Netflix series. The story will follow Planeswalkers Gideon Jura and Jace Beleren adventuring together as they right wrongs across the multiverse.
Ordered to series in June 2019, Netflix’s Magic: The Gathering will feature familiar and well-loved Planeswalkers for Magic fans while also introducing new characters. Fans of the card battling game have never seen the world of Magic: The Gathering come to life like this before, so expectations are quite high. Thankfully, it sounds like the team behind the series is already going to great lengths to knock it out of the park.
