Madame Web trailer connects a group of strangers as it weaves its way online

Sony continues to capitalize on its banner franchise as the studio has now introduced the brand new expanded characters in their Spider-man cinematic universe. The company continues its partnership with Marvel to bring us the new trailer for Madame Web. Right off the bat, we see Spider-man-like imagery as the film’s star, Dakota Johnson, encounters a mysterious masked menace that resembles everyone’s favorite web-head. The trailer sports somewhat of a departure from the usual origin story beats as it resembles more of a thriller, which the producer, Lorenzo di Bonaventura, once described.

The synopsis reads,
“In a switch from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing’s most enigmatic heroines. The suspense-driven thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures… if they can all survive a deadly present.”

Dakota Johnson stars as Cassandra Webb, who takes the moniker of the title character. Up-and-comer Sydney Sweeney of Euphoria and Anyone But You is portraying Julia Carpenter, also known as Spider-Woman. The Sony/Marvel joint film also features a cast that includes. Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, Emma Roberts, and Adam Scott. S.J. Clarkson, known for another Marvel property, Jessica Jones, takes on the directing duties for this superhero spin-off.

Madame Web joins the upcoming Kraven the Hunter in extending the Spider-man universe. The director of Kraven insists that his film is more of a tragedy just as di Bonaventura calls this movie a thriller. So, it looks as if Sony is still attempting to put fresh spins on every entry that connects to movies like Venom and Morbius.

The film’s co-star Syndey Sweeney spoke of her excitement in landing the role of Spider-Woman. She stated, “I went straight to the comic store, and I bought every comic that mentioned my character.” Sweeney added that this movie can stand apart from the usual superhero comic book adaptation, “I think it’s different from what people expect a superhero movie to be. Quote that! That’s a quote, because the tabloids will pick up everything else we talk about.”

Madame Web is set to hit theaters on February 16, 2024.
