Sony has ensnared another actor for their Marvel film, Madame Web, starring Dakota Johnson. Adam Scott (Severance, Parks and Recreation, Little Evil) is joining the cast, which includes Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Emma Roberts, and Tahar Rahim. S.J. Clarkson (The Defenders, Jessica Jones, Collateral) directs the Spider-Man spinoff written by Kerem Sanga.
Madame Web will revolve around Cassandra Webb, a character traditionally depicted as an elderly blind woman suffering from a chronic neuromuscular disease that hinders her moment and respiratory functions. As a byproduct of her condition, Madame Web remains connected to a life support system that looks like a spider’s web. Not without powers of her own, Cassandra is clairvoyant and imbued with precognitive abilities that allow her to see other’s paths along the “web of life.” The Madame Web character first appeared in the pages of The Amazing Spider-Man #210, which Marvel Comics published in November of 1980.
It is unknown who Scott will play in Madame Web.
It remains unclear whether Sony will present Madame Web as an elderly character or if she’ll be re-imagined as a younger mistress of memories whose powers have yet to surface. Johnson may play a version of Julia Carpenter, who inherits Cassandra’s powers when she dies. As Madame Web, Julia has the following abilities:
Prescience: Ability to perceive aspects of the future.
Telepathy: Ability to read minds and project thoughts.
Astral Projection: Ability to project her consciousness outside her body and travel.
Possible Teleportation: Since becoming the new Madame Web, Julia has seemingly teleported from one location to another. This power is not an ability previously demonstrated by either her or the first Madame Web. It’s possible Julia is not teleporting but instead projecting a vivid astral projection to a secondary location.
Scott is coming off his stunning role in the series Severance, which racked up 14 nominations, including best actor for Scott and best drama series. He also recently reprised the role of Henry Pollard for the Party Down revival.
