It’s a good think Robert Rodriguez has his own studio and can basically do whatever he wants, because I don’t see how this gets made otherwise. The director is supposedly going forward with his third Machete movie – MACHETE KILLS IN SPACE – according to franchise star Danny Trejo.
The actor, appearing at Mad Monster Party in Charlotte, told Halloween Daily News the following:
Robert and I are going to start to do Machete Kills in Space, so that’s going to be awesome. Absolutely. We’re going to be working on it this year.”
I admire Rodriguez a great deal for what he’s accomplished these past two decades, and everyone loves Trejo, but I can’t imagine anyone really wants to see MACHETE KILLS IN SPACE. The first film did fair business, making $44 million worldwide on a $10 million budget, but the second film completely flopped, earning a paltry $15 million worldwide. (Its $3 million opening weekend is still one of the worst all time for a film released in over 2,500 theaters.) It also just wasn’t very good. MACHETE is a one-joke proposition, and if you ask me it still only works as a faux trailer.
All that said, Rodriguez can go ahead and make a third MACHETE if he so desires at Troublemaker Studios; I’m sure he’ll get plenty of familiar faces to join in and work cheaply. Question is, who else will actually want to attend this party?
